The 2020 Charities
The Royal Caledonian Ball and Charities Trust has supported Scottish people in need throughout its nearly two centuries of existence. We are delighted that this tradition was able to continue in this extraordinary year, when the need was greater than ever.
2020 was not the best of years for the charitable sector. Even as the need for support has skyrocketed, income decreased dramatically as a result of cancelled campaigns and fundraising events. Nearly half of UK charities launched some form of emergency appeal since the pandemic began. Around one in eight small charities faced bankruptcy. As many as two thirds reported large cuts to their services.
In many ways the Trust was no different: the Royal Caledonian Ball remains its main source of income, and being unable to hold the Ball in 2020 had a considerable impact on the Trust's charitable giving. But thanks to the generosity of our supporters and guests – many of whom donated (part of) their ticket refund to one of our causes – we were nonetheless able to help some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
